Here we are again, Halloween is around the corner. The home improvement stores have been selling inflatable skeletons for a month. I have caramel corn in the candy jars, and my wife wants me to attach corn stalks to my porch posts, for some un-godly "Children of the Corn" type reason. So while I'm hiding in my office I figured what better time to write about the scariest mistakes you can make with your website. 1. Outdated content. There's no excuse for having old, outdated content on your website. In order to attract and convert customers, you want to make sure the content on your website is fresh and updated on a regular basis. You can't afford the loss of credibility that can come from outdated content and images. You work in technology, make sure you're keeping it up to date. 2. Sliders suck. If you're using a slider on your home page your website sucks. It doesn't probably suck...it sucks. It sucks like a .50¢ whore on main street, poorly and often. Before you start sending me hate emails, I know what you're going to say..."But Paul, I've seen sliders on the Apple website" You're right, at one point, Apple used sliders on their site. But let's be clear, you're not Apple. If you have any other doubts, you don't have to listen to me. You can watch this video. 3. Not linking to your social networks. Facebook has 1.9 Billion users. 1.2 Billion use Facebook every day. So, it's safe to say that Facebook isn't going anywhere. If you're not actively posting to Facebook (I recommend at least once per day) and linking your website posts to your Facebook page, you're making a huge mistake. Using social media to market your business and drive customers to your website will only work if you make it easy for users to move from one to the other. If done right, you can drive a lot more traffic to your site. 4. Slow doesn't win the race.Web visitors are an intolerant bunch. They simply don't have the patience for your slow-ass website to load. Studies have shown if your website takes longer than 4 seconds to load, you need to think about a redesign or stripping away whatever it is that's making it load slowly. 5. Failing to put your phone number in easy to find locations. Most of you, because of dealer agreements, don't sell products online. With that said, the objective is to have a visitor pick up the phone and call you. Don't make it hard on them to find your phone number. Place it prominently throughout the website, or at the very least on the contact page.
